AIRINC Announces Major Expansion!

AIRINC has begun a major expansion at its facility located on U.S. 98 in Fairhope. As a result of new business from United Airlines, AIRINC is investing $400,000 and will create 15 new jobs in the local area over the next three months.

“The project involves purchasing and installation of a new Ingersoll Rand high-pressure compressor, air tanks and booster pump,” said AIRINC General Manager Tony Smith, adding “the new equipment will allow AIRINC the capability to test virtually every valve on any aircraft thereby enhancing our ability to compete for repairs of pneumatic aircraft components. This new business will require us to add new employees in 2004, primarily A&P mechanics.

Smith thanked the BCEDA, Industrial Development Board of the City of Fairhope, Alabama Industrial Development Training and the Baldwin County Career Center for their infrastructure and training support assistance in connection with the expansion.

BCEDA President Lance LaCour said, “This announcement comes as great news for the Baldwin County economy as AIRINC will be creating high-wage, skilled jobs. It also helps us build critical mass towards our goal of building a larger aerospace parts manufacturing and aerospace maintenance, repair and overhaul industrial base.”

AIRINC is a privately held company with nearly 60 employees owned by the Aero-Mark Group, Inc. which includes two other companies: Loud Engineering located in Ontario, CA and General Aluminum Forgings located in Colorado Springs, CO.

Foreign Trade Zone Sites in Baldwin County Approved By Department of Commerce!

As part of the expansion of the Mobile General Purpose Foreign-Trade Zone, Baldwin County has been approved for four sites by the U.S. Department of Commerce Foreign-Trade Zones Board. The General Purpose Foreign-Trade Zone sites are located in Loxley, Robertsdale, Fairhope, and Gulf Shores and encompass total of 1,139 acres and are part of area industrial and business complexes.

“Foreign-Trade Zones increase the ability of participating local companies to compete with international businesses”, noted Lance LaCour, President of BCEDA. “They are also an excellent tool to attract and retain manufacturing and distribution related industries.” According to Greg Jones, President of the Mobile Foreign-Trade Zone Corporation, “Foreign-Trade Zones (FTZ’s) are a part of a federal trade program that allows U.S.-based companies to save on duties and tariffs, and thereby enhances their competitiveness in today’s global economy.” Other FTZ advantages are as follows:

Advantages

1.  Relief from inverted tariffs: If foreign merchandise is brought into an FTZ and manufactured into a product that carries a lower duty rate, then the lower rate applies.

2. No duty payment is owed while it is being manipulated, repaired, or stored in the FTZ.

3. No Duty on Domestic Content or Value Added – No duty is assessed on domestic parts, materials or labor that is incorporated into the product.

4. No duty on re-exports.

5. Zone-to-Zone Transfers – A vendor located at one FTZ may sell goods to a buyer in another Zone anywhere in the U.S. and transfer those goods with no duty paid on the goods.

LaCour noted that there are two local companies in Baldwin County that may be able to utilize the advantages of the FTZ brings immediately. These companies are Euromex and AIRINC.

The areas where the zones are located are the Loxley I-10 Business Park north of I-10 in Loxley, the Robertsdale Industrial Park located west of AL59 on CR54, the H. L. Sonny Callahan Airport Area in Fairhope, and the Gulf Shores Industrial Park located adjacent to and at Jack Edwards Airport.

BCEDA has worked on the Foreign Trade Zone project for five years and expended $5,000 for Baldwin County’s part of the application. LaCour thanked all of the local elected officials and Industrial Development Board Members, companies, City of Mobile, Chambers of Commerce, BCEDA Staff, and Greg Jones for their efforts in getting the zone locations approved.

For more information on the foreign trade zone and location of the zones, contact Sean Lytle at 251-947-2445 or check the web at www.baldwineda.com/site_selectors/ftz.htm.

                                   Miller Manufacturing Relocates
                              to Robertsdale!

Miller Manufacturing, a metal fabrication and tool & die company that produces leveling devices, furniture components and fastening assemblies made the decision to relocate its headquarters, manufacturing and distribution facility from Newark, New Jersey to Robertsdale, Alabama. The company, owned by Robert Miller, had been considering Baldwin County for 15 years and is about to complete its move into the Robertsdale Industrial Park in a new 20,000 sq. ft. building and employ 15 persons over the next two years. Congratulations go to Sean Lytle, Project Manager on this project and the Robertsdale Industrial Development Board for their help with tax incentives and assistance with selling their industrial development property.

Quality Filters is Awarded Federal Grant for Employee Training

Quality Filters (QF) in Robertsdale manufactures filters for HVAC systems and credits implementing lean manufacturing principles with their expansion as they have recently added a new 10,000 sq. ft. building. Because QF wanted to continue education of their management team and workforce, BCEDA introduced QF to Kathy Shumate of the Alabama Career Centers – who helped them apply for and get approval of a $50,000 grant for lean training over the next two years! This is a matching funds grant – but part of the match can be the wages of the employees who are being trained. The process involving the grant application was simple and the grant was awarded within six weeks of the request. If your company is planning on investing in incumbent or lean training call Bob Higgins at 947-5715 for more information.

Baldwin County Hosts Industry Appreciation Week !

The Baldwin County Commission and area municipalities, along with the county’s five chambers of commerce and BCEDA, recently proclaimed September 22-26 as Industry Appreciation week. “Industrial Enterprises” in Alabama include manufacturing, wholesale trade, transportation, computer software and services, research & development, recycling and agricultural processing businesses.

Over 500 business in Baldwin County are classified as “industrial enterprises” employing 9,400 people. The ripple effect is another 20,000 jobs that help service the primary industrial base in Baldwin County. These jobs total nearly $1/4 billion in annual payroll and taxes paid within the municipal, county, state and federal levels.

In addition to the taxes that are paid there is also an immeasurable impact on charities, civic organizations, schools and churches. “In an area known so well for its hospitality industry, we want to take this opportunity to recognize and honor our area industries,” said Lance LaCour, President & CEO for the Baldwin County Economic Development Alliance.

Existing Business Interviews Underway!

Working in coordination with Bob Higgins of BCEDA, the Economic Development Committees of the Eastern Shore and South Baldwin Chambers each have about a dozen members interviewing existing businesses in their areas. The objectives of these interviews are to help establish new relationships between business leaders and to identify opportunities where the community can help these businesses grow. So far over 40 interviews have been completed. This effort is part of a state-wide program that recognizes that our strongest economic growth opportunity is – as always – through our existing businesses! While the individual company responses are confidential, we will share some of the overall results with you in our next newsletter.

BCEDA Represented at 2003 NBAA
Trade Show in Orlando

BCEDA Business and Community Development Manager, Matt Kelly, recently attended the 2003 National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) conference and trade show in Orlando. Kelly, who began working at the Alliance in late August, represented Baldwin County and helped at the South Alabama Aviation Advantage (SAAA) booth in Orlando. The SAAA booth was arranged as a regional marketing effort for south Alabama. Those who helped at the SAAA booth included representatives from Alabama Power, Alabama Electric Cooperative, Economic Development Partnership of Alabama (EDPA), as well as local economic development agencies and area airport representatives. Kelly said the trade show was an excellent opportunity to network with aerospace and general aviation companies from all over the world in hopes of attracting more aerospace/aviation firms to the state, and more specifically to Baldwin County. “I was able to meet with numerous aerospace firms and come away with some promising leads in terms of companies to pursue that would be nice matches for Baldwin County,” Kelly said.

Also in attendance from Baldwin County was Gulf Shores Airport Administrator, Russ Kilgore. “The NBAA trade show is extremely beneficial because you have 90 percent of the manufacturers in the aviation world in one location at one time,” Kilgore said.

LEAN: Making Baldwin Companies More Profitable

BCEDA and the Baldwin County chambers invited the Alabama Technology Network to teach its introductory classes in “Lean Manufacturing” and “Lean Office” to area companies. These classes provide companies with tools to get their employees involved productive, profitability improvements. About five different companies sent 17 people to these classes. When asked if we should recommend other Baldwin companies take these classes, every one of the students gave an enthusiastic endorsement. They also said that they learned enough in the introductory class to immediately apply these principles in their own business. If you are interested in learning more about this, contact Harry Cecil at ATN (888-925-8764 ext 103)

Information Technology Academy at Daphne High School to Open Soon

Baldwin County Schools have taken a very progressive role in establishing academies within several high schools to meet the needs of the different communities. As a result of a business survey and other efforts by BCEDA and the school system, Daphne High School has announced that it will open an “Information Technology Academy” within their normal curriculum in the fall of 2004. While the exact content is still being developed, it is expected to provide a four year set of elective courses in business-related information technology leading to entry-level professional certification for graduating seniors. The individual elective courses would also be available to other students in the school. If you are interested in being on the business advisory committee for this academy, contact Mike Lucci, Vice Principal, at 251-626-8787.

Thinking about Promoting Someone?

If your company is considering promotion of an employee and the company can commit to a 10% raise for the employee, the company may be eligible to be reimbursed for 50% of that employee’s wages for up to six months while the employee is training for the new job!

Alabama’s Career Center System is currently offering a 50% reimbursement on wages to businesses providing training to their employed workers.

Employers must be willing to promote the workers by increasing wages and providing additional responsibilities.

Employees will need to complete Workforce Investment Act eligibility requirements and register at the Foley or Bay Minette CareerLink.

The CareerLink’s job developer will prepare all paperwork.
