A Note from the President
The year 2010
was challenging, to say the least. But as always, Baldwin County's
greatest public and private leadership was equal to the task.
Working together through the Coastal Resiliency Commission and in
conjunction with the Coastal Recovery Commission, a plan is in
place. This plan is not only to survive in 2011 but to thrive in
2011.We thank you for your past support and
look forward to working with you in 2011 to move Baldwin County to
the next level.

2011 Year in Review
2010
brought a realm of challenges to our business community, some
large, some small. It will always be remembered as the “Year of
the BP Oil Spill.”
Following the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, the Alliance teamed up
with the Alabama Gulf Coast and the South Baldwin Chambers to
implement strategies to strengthen our business community. In
conjunction with Faulkner State Community College, the Governor’s
Office of Workforce Development, the Alabama Technology Network
and other business partners, the Business Support Center was
founded. This center consolidated local, state, and federal
support in one location to allow our business owners to seek the
assistance they needed immediately. Faulkner has been a strong
supporter of our community and now on a path to become a strong,
responsive partner with businesses. The Business Support Center
has worked with over 400 existing businesses to guide them through
the crisis times and to allow them to better position themselves
for success. The BSC has been nationally recognized as a “best
practice” following a business crisis and is being recommended as
a template for similar situations all over the United States.
Business leaders in the coastal cities also built a strong Coastal
Resiliency Coalition. This team consists of the mayors of Foley,
Gulf Shores, and Orange Beach, county officials, two chambers of
commerce, Gulf Shores/Orange Beach Tourism, and the Alliance
meeting twice weekly in the “war room” to evaluate the needs and
strategize on the best possible solutions with the minds that can
make it happen. In the CRC War Room, five of our major state
universities – the University of Alabama, Auburn University,
University of South Alabama, University of Alabama/Huntsville, and
the University of Alabama/Birmingham - stepped forward as partners
in crisis and brought strong resources with them. . The “war room”
has also been recognized as a “best practice” model to be used in
similar disasters. A huge “Thank You” goes to Bill Taylor and the
Economic Development Partnership of Alabama for all the support
and leadership throughout the crisis and the recovery.
The
Alliance continues to assist entrepreneurs in starting new
businesses.
This year the Revolving Loan Fund was awarded another $150,000
from the USDA in funding to allow us to continue helping
businesses grow. The Alliance is optimistic about future
partnerships with the USDA to build businesses in Baldwin County.
In 2010, the Alliance has worked with 19 potential startup
businesses. We are evaluating offering a physical location for our
business incubator, as well as forming partnerships with other
incubators for information sharing.
Other things that we were
involved with for the year include:
 |
SAWDC hired a new executive
director and moved to larger offices |
 |
Began the
process of film industry recruiting |
 |
Formed a joint
business advisory council for Faulkner Community College &
Baldwin Schools |
While
2010 brought challenges to the Baldwin County area, none of them
were unsurpassable. With teamwork, dedicated elected officials,
passionate citizens and the support of our business community,
Baldwin County continues to be a wonderful place to live, work,
and raise a family.
Remember, together we are “good people, good business.”

2011 Staff Promotions
As of February 2011, we are proud to announce that
Bob Higgins will be promoted from Vice President to Senior Vice
President in recognition of his work over his tenure with the
Baldwin County Economic Development Alliance. His recent
accomplishments include his work following the Oil Spill with the
establishment of the Business Support Center on the Gulf Coast,
which has been recognized nationally as a "best practice" for
organization following a crisis. President Robert Ingram
recognized Bob Higgins in the January Board of Directors' meeting,
stating, "He has incredible private
sector experience and outstanding leadership abilities. Those
attributes have enabled Bob to “wear a variety of hats” at the
Alliance, and performed all of his duties extremely well."
Also, Josh Thornton will be promoted from Director
of Economic Development to V ice President of Economic Development
for his exemplary work in the recruiting of new industries and
expansions of current industries. Josh has been with our office
since Fall of 2008 and has grown in his position in economic
development. "Josh has progressed in the profession quickly and is
now recognized by his peers for both his dedication and his
abilities. We are lucky and proud that he is a part of our team
and his promotion is well deserved," states Ingram.
We are proud to have these two men as an integral
part of our Alliance staff and look forward to many more years of
Economic Development success. |

NEW YEAR, NEW OPPORTUNITIES
A
new year has approached us along with new challenges and great opportunities
that await us. At the end of 2010, there were a total of 10 projects
announced, creating 200 new jobs and over $27,000,000 in investment. We saw
9 of our existing industries expand with 1 new company relocating an
operation to Baldwin County. We worked with a wide range of industries that
consisted of aerospace, resin & plastics mfg., recycling operation, boat
repair & mfg., call centers, and whole sale petroleum & food distributors.
Overall 2010 was a great year considering the challenges and hurdles this
area has faced with the economy and oil spill.
This
year, our goals remain the same as previous years when it comes to
recruiting new industry and working with our existing industry to create new
high paying jobs and diversify this economy. We have set our goals to
announce 10-15 projects, create 400-600 new jobs and add $30-50 million in
investment to our local economy. Currently we are working on 9 projects
with some rolling
over from last year. The types of projects we are working on are aerospace,
industrial & residential mfg., metal fabrication, and internet related.
This organization wouldn't be successful without the continued support of our
investors and I’d like to thank you for all your support and look forward to a new
year that will bring lots of opportunities to this great area.

ALLIANCE INVESTOR, ASCEND,
TO DOUBLE CAPACITY & CREATE NEW JOBS
One of Ascend Performance Materials’ key manufacturing facilities
will double its Foley, Ala., production capacity and add jobs at its
39-acre plant on South Bay Street.
Representing an important step in the manufacture of Nylon 6,6
polymer and fiber, Ascend’s Foley facility has a 50-year-plus presence
on the Alabama Gulf Coast.
Foley Plant Manager Thomas Boggs expects to hire 20 employees at the
Foley facility by mid-year, an increase in the total Foley workforce of
approximately 30 percent. "Our new hires will include plant operations
personnel, as well as more specialized jobs such as electrical
technicians and engineers," he said.
"In order to double our production capacity, and thereby create jobs
in Foley, we’ve added a second state-of-the-art extruder, which can
handle a wider range of products," said Boggs.
Alabama’s aggressive economic development initiative, including
incentives for business growth, was instrumental in Ascend’s decision to
expand operations in Foley.
Houston-based Ascend Performance Materials is a global leader in the
production of Nylon 6,6, proprietary chemicals, polymers and fibers,
which are used to produce a wide variety of products for consumer and
commercial applications. Its worldwide markets comprise industrial,
electrical and electronic, automotive, apparel, carpet, cable tie, and
compounding, to name just a few. The Foley plant is part of Ascend’s
fully integrated world-scale manufacturing network. Ascend produces 100
product categories, and its global sales and distribution reach 860
customers via 1,250 supply locations – from Los Angeles to Tokyo.
"We expect exports to Europe and Asia to increase significantly as we
double our production capacity, although we’ve exported products
worldwide for some time," Boggs said.
Ascend is among Alabama’s extensive automotive supplier network,
according to trade association
Manufacture Alabama. Leading automobile manufacturers, such
as Mercedes-Benz, Honda, Hyundai, and Kia, operate vehicle assembly
plants in Alabama. Today, Alabama is home to more than 300 automotive
related companies, a 286 percent increase over 1991, including a vast
supplier network.
Ascend has a second manufacturing operation in the area - 45 miles
east of the Foley facility. The North Pensacola operation employs
approximately 970 workers and supplies raw material to the Foley
facility, as well as finished product for other applications.
In addition to Foley’s increase in capacity and its plan to hire
additional workers, in October 2010 the Foley facility celebrated two
years without an OSHA recordable injury, an accomplishment Boggs
attributes to an emphasis on personal accountability among employees
plus successful employee-driven safety programs.
